Rebranding: When Is It Really Necessary?
“We need a new logo.” We hear this phrase quite often. Of course, a new look can be exactly what’s needed, but for us, a successful rebranding starts somewhere else: with the question of whether the brand still fits the company and reflects its current direction.
Rebranding can make sense when a company has undergone significant changes—whether due to a new business model, new target audiences, or a shift in strategic direction. A positioning that no longer fits the current situation, or a brand identity that no longer clearly communicates what a company stands for, can also be reasons for a reorientation.
Just as often, however, it turns out that a complete rebranding isn’t necessary. The strategic direction remains valid, while the brand identity has simply become a bit dated. In this case, a targeted refresh can be exactly the right solution.
From our perspective, every rebranding should therefore begin with a clear question: What should change, and why? Only once this question is answered should we turn our attention to the logo, colors, typefaces, and visual identity.
A new design can make a brand appear more modern. However, a strong brand is created above all through clear positioning, a relevant message, and an image that conveys this stance consistently and authentically. For us, rebranding isn’t just about making a change. It means realigning the brand with the company and its strategic direction.
That’s why we look at each case individually and work with our clients to determine what the brand truly needs—a complete rebranding, a targeted refresh, or perhaps simply clearer communication.
