A goldfish’s attention span?

The comparison comes from a widely cited Microsoft study from 2015 and has held true to this day: Supposedly, a goldfish has a longer attention span than modern humans. Whether this is actually scientifically sound is almost beside the point. Because one thing is hard to dispute: The way people perceive and process information has fundamentally changed.

Today, our target audiences navigate a world full of stimuli. Between social media, push notifications, emails, videos, and news, an endless amount of content is available at any given moment. At the same time, the rapid proliferation of AI-generated content

is creating an additional flood of information that is increasingly characterized by interchangeable content and standardized phrasing.

As a result, attention hasn’t necessarily become scarcer, but it has become significantly more valuable.

Today, people decide within a matter of seconds whether content is relevant to them. Not because they can’t concentrate, but because they have to choose from a vast amount of information. Those who manage to offer genuine added value, tell an interesting story, or open up a new perspective will continue to capture attention—often even more than ever before.

What This Means for Businesses
Good communication doesn’t need to be louder—it needs to be more relevant. It must be clear, understandable, and to the point. People aren’t paying less attention to content; they’re choosing what to focus on more consciously. Within a few seconds, they decide:

✔️ Is this relevant to me?
✔️ Is it worth reading further?
✔️ Does this add value for me?

In a world full of information, it’s not those who send the most who win—but those who really have something to say.
